Mission Statement
Saint Dominic Academy, a community of academic excellence, empowers women for leadership in our global society. Rooted in Christian values, this Catholic Institution embraces the diversity of its constituents promoting unity through understanding and education.
History

In 1872, a community of Dominican nuns from New York City came to Jersey City to work among the children of immigrants -- a mission of education led to the establishment of St. Dominic Academy. The cornerstone of the first school building in Jersey City was laid in 1878.
In 1881, the community became a separate Dominican Motherhouse, based in Jersey City, where it remained until its 1912 move to the present site in Caldwell, New Jersey. Saint Dominic Academy, however, remained in Jersey City. In that same year -- 1912 -- it received its first charter and full accreditation from the New Jersey State Department of Education.
As the number of students increased, the school first moved to 669 Bergen Avenue and then to three houses on Bentley Avenue. Finally, on March 7, 1942, SDA moved to its present location on Kennedy Boulevard, the former Carteret Men's Club.
SDA has a strong tradition -- but it is a tradition on the move, expanding to meet the challenges and needs of a demanding world. In 1994, one of our fondest dreams came true, when the new wing opened, with its up-to-date science, computer and language labs.
