Important News for the Class of 2011

Placement Exams for Incoming Freshmen

Students who have registered at St. Dominic Academy are required to take an assessment exam (honors students are exempt) and are invited to take Language/Math placement exams.

Wednesday, May 9, 2007, 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. - Assessment Tests in Writing and Mathematics

(Honors students are exempt). Don't forget to bring a pen and pencil. (Calculators are not allowed for this exam.)

Wednesday, May 16, 2007, 3:30 - 5:00 p.m. - Foreign Language Placement Exam

Students with prior knowledge (written, grammar, and oral) of Latin, French or Spanish are invited to take a placement exam to skip the first year of a language and be placed into Latin II, French II or Spanish II. Students who indicated their interest in taking this exam during Registration Day have been contacted via letter by Registrar Sr. Marie Mueller, O.P. If there are any questions about this exam, please contact Sr. Marie at (201) 434-5938, ext. 34.

Thursday, May 17, 2007, 3:30 - 5:00 p.m. - Math Placement Exam

(Calculators are permissible.) Please bring a pencil. Students who feel that they have taken the equivalent of freshman year high school algebra are invited to take a Math placement exam. Pending satisfactory performance, the student will be placed into Geometry during her freshman year. (Typically, a student at SDA takes Algebra I during freshman year and Geometry during sophomore year.) Students who indicated their interest in taking this exam during Registration Day have been contacted via letter by Registrar Sr. Marie Mueller, O.P. Admission Requirements

Saint Dominic Academy is one of the oldest private secondary schools in New Jersey. Our mission is to offer a superior, quality education to college bound young women in grades nine through twelve.

To prepare our students for admission to the finest colleges and universities in the world, our course of study is designed for those who are willing to meet academic challenges and take advantage of the enriching experiences we offer.

Our students come from Jersey City and 27 surrounding communities in New Jersey (Hudson, Essex and Bergen Counties) and New York. We take pride in the multi-cultural and multi-ethnic diversity of our student body.

Applying to SDA

As part of the admission process, prospective students are required to take the CO-OP exam -- Cooperative Admissions Exam. We also encourage you to visit our school and see our state-of-the-art facilities and meet the people who make an SDA education such an enriching experience. For information on the CO-OP exam and the schedule of Open Houses, please contact  Carolyn Smith, Director of Public Relations and Admissions, (Telephone: 201-434-5938, ext. 35).

In addition to the CO-OP exam, an applicant's academic transcripts, including a copy of the report card and all standardized test scores from 6th through 8th grades, must be sent to SDA by her grammar school.

Applications For Admission due December 1, 2006

IMPORTANT REMINDER for 8th graders: 8th grade students are reminded that the SDA application for admission is due December 1, 2006. The application is entitled "Ninth Grade Applicant Record." (Catholic School students should have completed these forms already).

Tuition Assistance

If you are applying for tuition assistance and are an incoming freshman OR a returning student, The SDA Tuition Assistance Form is to be mailed to the address below no later than MARCH 31st, 2007 for the 2007-2008 school year. Please download the form and list "St. Dominic Academy" as the Name of Parish on the form.

Please note: Tuition for the 2007-2008 Scholastic year is $6,800 plus $525 in fees. This includes books, yearbook, related classroom and laboratory fees, testing fees (except AP), Student Accident Insurance, and Student I.D.

Special Note: 2006 CO-OP Entrance Exam

All 8th grade girls who apply to SDA are required to take the Cooperative Admissions Exam (CO-OP) and request that their scores be sent to SDA. Please note that you must register to take the CO-OP exam which will be given on Friday, November 10, 2006.

An outside company, CTB/McGraw-Hill, handles all test day logistics. You must register to take the test with CTB. You may register online at www.ctb.com/coop/. Select the New Jersey Option, then select "Online Application Registration" and follow the instructions. Please note that November 3, 2006 is the deadline for online registrations to be received by CTB/McGraw-Hill. You will need a major credit card to register online; the test fee is $33.00. You are advised to register early, as SDA may fill up as a test site.

Please note that SDA's code number is "826." If you wish to take the exam here at SDA, you will need the code when you register for the test site. Be sure to have your scores sent to SDA using code number 826. By November 1st, you will be provided with an Admission Form that you must bring with you to the test site. You must report to the test site at 8 a.m.; testing will be begin at 8:30 a.m. and will conclude at approximately 12:45 p.m.

School Visits

Grammar School Principals and Guidance Counselors -- Would you like a representative to come and speak with your 8th and/or 7th grade girls about SDA? Please call Ms. Carolyn Smith, Director of Public Relations and Admissions, at (201) 434-5938, ext. 35 to schedule a visit.

Freshman For A Day

We offer 8th and 7th grade girls the opportunity to experience what it would be like to be an SDA student. You are invited to spend a day at the academy where you'll be assigned a friendly SDA Freshman to escort you to classes for the day.

8th grade girls are invited to attend SDA in October and November, while 7th grade girls are invited in March and April.

Visitors arrive at 8:05 a.m. and are dismissed at 2:38 p.m. Lunch is provided. Kindly dress appropriately (no jeans or sneakers).
