A Letter from Anne Dalton O'Brien, '65
Dear Alumnae and Friends,
Last year about this time, I was coaching a 7th and 8th grade basketball team in North Arlington. One of the eighth graders and her twin had plans of attending St. Dominic Academy in the fall of 2002. As the season progressed and I became acquainted with these girls, I thought how fortunate they were to go to the best girls school in the area and what an asset they would be to the school.
Unfortunately the Enron scandal hit and their father -- who worked
for a printing company which did most of its business with Enron -- lost his
job. Remembering my own and my daughters' high school years at St. Dominic Academy,
I was upset that these girls would not be able to take advantage of the opportunities
that St. Dominic Academy would offer them.
They would not have memories of going to classes that had names instead
of numbers, singing at the PATH station, finding new friends who encourage you
to be the best, walking in Madonna Hall for the first time, enduring Freshman
Survival Night, going on a first retreat, or trying out for an SDA team.
Therefore, in time-honored tradition, I proceeded to ask my friends
and relatives for donations. Sadly, the girls' family had to move out of the
area. But I realized that the donations from friends would be a single occasion.
This started me thinking about a long-range plan that would help many more academically
qualified girls, who would be unable to attend SDA because of finances.
So here is the other shoe that you have been expecting to drop. I hope, with your help, to establish the Sister to Sister Scholarship Fund, which will raise money through a 50/50 raffle. Each ticket will cost $100 but only 200 tickets will be sold. The odds of winning are 200 to one, much better than the Pick Six. Individuals or groups may purchase these tickets.
The winner will be drawn January 17, 2003 at an alumnae basketball game and a varsity basketball game versus Holy Family Academy at P.S. 17, Jersey City
Besides looking for ticket buyers, this is also a call for all alumnae to participate in an alumnae basketball game. St. Dominic Academy has had a long and outstanding history of high school basketball, which we would like to celebrate with an alumnae game. There is an entrance fee of $25 that will entitle an alumna to play and receive a tee shirt to commemorate the evening.
