Senior Mariel Teschlog Chosen as Jersey Journal's Everyday Teen Hero

On April 23, the Jersey Journal announced that SDA Senior Mariel Teschlog of Bayonne was chosen as one of the 2007 Everyday Teen Heroes, along with Christopher Hidrovo of East Newark. Here is how the Jersey Journal described Mariel:

Teschlog is a top student at St. Dominic Academy in Jersey City, where she is a catalyst behind fundraisers to fight hunger and cancer. An all-county performer in javelin for the Blue Devils track team, she has spent several weeks during her high school career volunteering to help the needy in the Appalachian Mountains in West Virginia and also spends time each month sorting goods at the St. Mary Parish food Pantry in Bayonne.

SDA President Benjamin J. Dineen says, "Any time students are asked to volunteer for something, I know that Mariel will be there." Her guidance counselor, Mrs. Carol Roc, describes Mariel in the following way:

Mariel has a most distinguished reputation at St. Dominic Academy as one who exceeds the qualities and talents of most students…In my 38 years of working with students, I have never met a student as determined and organized as Mariel.
Director of Public Relations and Admissions Ms. Carolyn Smith notes:
Mariel's commitment to co-curricular activities is uncanny. She has been a member of 11 activities offered here at SDA for a minimum of three years each. Such forethought in choosing the activities in which to participate is quite amazing. Her loyalty to each activity is notable.

Mariel and adult winners in five other categories will be feted at an awards dinner on May 22 at Casino-In-The-Park, Lincoln Park, Jersey City.

    Congratulations, Mariel!

    SDA Hosting Swiss Exchange Student

St. Dominic Academy is very pleased to be hosting Exchange Student Kimberly Zwygart of Switzerland. Kimberly will be spending her Junior year here at SDA. Kimberly's father, Dr. Zwygart, Major General, Swiss Armed Forces, visited Kimberly and met with her teachers and classmates during SDA's annual walk-a-thon.

Kimberly is happy to report that "Everthing is going great." She admits that she felt overwhelmed during the first week of school and wasn't even sure how to wear the uniform properly. Now she can boast having completed her "Very best soccer season ever."

Kimberly loved the experience of playing on the SDA Blue Devils Soccer Team (or fussball team to those in her native Switzerland). Kimberly speaks so fondly of the friends she made on the team, who she says, "Were so nice to me." She said, "I enjoyed every practice and every game I played with them. I really appreciate the experience and will never forget it." She also sung Coach Lenaghan's praises and enjoyed her sense of humor. Kimberly also says, "I really appreciated (SDA Student Council President and Soccer Captain) Alison Komorowski taking the time to come to my Homeroom to welcome me here. She made me feel so welcome. She is a great leader."

In addition to soccer, Kimberly has become a member of the prestigious SDA Glee Club.

Kimberly said that her experience at St. Dominic Academy is different than that which she was used to at her home school, Gymnasium Koniz-Lebermatt. The Berne native attends a co-ed school in Switzerland. She said that the programs we have here are great. "We don't have a walk-a-thon; and we don't dress up for Halloween." She joked that Switzerland is boring compared to her experiences thus far at SDA. Kimberly also attended her first football game - a Prep game. She said she enjoyed the "really exciting" atmosphere.

Kimberly has visited the Jersey City area before, in 2002 and 2003 on vacation. She also lived in Kansas for one year as a child.

Kimberly's brother attends Hunter College where he is majoring in Political Science. She is looking forward to a Christmas visit from her parents and 16-year-old sister.

Kimberly has emailed her Swiss classmates about her experiences, some of whom are also participating in Student Exchange Programs in Northern Ireland, Brazil and Venezuela, to name a few.

Kimberly says, "I am really glad for the opportunity - for this experience - and to learn new things." She added, "My mother is also happy because she wanted me to become less shy." We love having you here, Kimberly!

  • Drama Club Performs Two Works

The SDA Drama Club presented two works on December 1, 2006 in ELAN auditorium.

The first was MmmBeth in which... "Everything goes wrong. The witches take over the storytelling, Queen Duncan would rather open a donut franchise than die, Lady M's a bloodthirsty June Cleaver, and the murderers are preoccupied with creating a commercial for their services." This has to be one of the craziest Macbeth parodies out there!

The Drama Club also performed Tick Talk -- when the characters are limited in speech, how will they be able to express their emotions? What if they have something terribly important to say but can't? They better find a way soon before time runs out.

Ms. Linda Gilbert is the moderator of SDA's Drama Club.

Students were joined by members of two parishes in the Archdiocese of Newark, St. Theresa in Kenilworth and St. Michael in Cranford.

Students engaged in physical labor, such as house repair, to assist several families get back on their feet. They also repaired a community center. The students built a ramp, built a deck, relocated and painted the town museum, painted the inside of a house, built a wall, and prepared daily meals. Students also tutored children in an after-school program. One evening, the students were treated to a dinner at the home of Ms. Pasternak’s parents. Ms. Pasternak is a native of West Virginia.

Sophomore Sarah Rogers said, "Compared to the people I met on the trip, I have everything .. . Some of the people I met on this trip made me want to cry, and give them my shoes, or my hoodie." She added, "Sometimes the last thing you expect to have an impact on your life leaves the biggest one . . . I (now) realize the difference people can make improving the lives of others, individually, and even more so when they come together as a group to share their talents and abilities together in service to others."

Sarah said that her second day of work was most fulfilling because her group accomplished so much; they went to a local lumber yard and picked up wood and supplies, and then went to a rock quarry and purchased gravel. Students observed firsthand some of the serious issues facing the rural poor, namely, poor living conditions and sanitation, underemployment, lack of health benefits, and scarce educational opportunities.

Prior to the trip, students participated in four educational sessions focusing on human rights issues in rural Appalachia. Students also participated in fund raising activities, such as bake and wreath sales. Upon their return, students also participated in debriefing sessions that culminated in an evening in which they shared their experiences with the SDA community and parents.

Negro League Players Robert Scott and Sidney Blacknoll Address Students During Black History Month

In observance of Black History month, St. Dominic Academy hosted former New York Black Yankees pitcher Robert Scott and former Birmingham Black Baron Sidney Blacknoll.

The two spoke to students about what it was like to play in the Negro League. Students learned about the challenges that members of the Negro Leagues faced.

Mr. Scott also spoke about how things changed for black players after Jackie Robinson broke the major league color barrier in 1947. (Scott played on Robinson's all-star team in 1950.) He also discussed his interaction with current day baseball players, including Derek Jeter. And he expressed his appreciation to baseball for giving the Negro players a pension and to the New York Mets for recognizing them every year.

Scott stressed the importance of education to the students and encouraged them to always make healthy decisions throughout their lives.

The entertaining pair was gracious enough to autograph baseballs for the SDA students. SDA History teacher and Softball coach Dave Majewski organized the event. Mr. Majewski presented the men with a bat autographed by members of the Championship Blue Devils softball team.
